Our History
Founded in 1902 by John D. Wood, The Wood Mortuary was located on the second floor of Wood's hardware and grocery store on Randall Street in Downtown Greer, South Carolina. Wood turned his attentions to the funeral service establishment in 1925 and made it his full time occupation.
After the death of John D. Wood in 1935, the firm was moved to its present location at 300 West Poinsett Street and was incorporated, with Richard H. Wood, Sr., son of John D. Wood, as President.A formal chapel was added to the existing facility in 1948 and in 1971 the home of Dr. M.L. Lanford was purchased and connected to the chapel.Upon graduating from Presbyterian College and serving a two year stint in the U.S. Army, Richard H. Wood, Jr. joined the firm in 1963 on a full time basis and was elected secretary-treasurer, becoming the third generation of the Wood family in funeral service. He took over operation of the company in 1980, when his father passed away.With well over a century of service to Greer and surrounding communities, Richard H. Wood, Jr., late president of the firm, stated: "We feel very fortunate that the community has put the confidence in us to carry out their wishes after death." Wood believed that longevity and a personal touch are the reasons that people put their trust in the business his family built.

Dick Wood, Jr. was the son of the late Richard Haynes Wood, Sr. and Lois Crow Wood. Born July 13, 1938, he was a 1956 graduate of Greer High School, 1960 graduate of Presbyterian College, and a U.S. Army Veteran. After marrying Sharone Bishop Wood, they became parents of two daughters, and have one grandson. Dick was the third generation of the Wood family in funeral service, following his grandfather, John D. Wood, and his father, Richard H. Wood, Sr., as President of The Wood Mortuary, Inc., and Wood Memorial Park. For over fifty years, Dick Wood, Jr. faithfully served Greer and the surrounding communities as a licensed funeral director, until his passing on November 12, 2023.

Married to Stephanie Bull Jones, Greg and Stephanie have two sons and four grandsons. Greg has been employed with The Wood Mortuary, Inc. since 1976, and is a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer.
