Our History
Founded in 1902 by John D. Wood, The Wood Mortuary was located on the second floor of Wood's hardware and grocery store on Randall Street in Downtown Greer, South Carolina. Wood turned his attentions to the funeral service establishment in 1925 and made it his full time occupation.
After the death of John D. Wood in 1935, the firm was moved to its present location at 300 West Poinsett Street and was incorporated, with Richard H. Wood, Sr., son of John D. Wood, as President.
A formal chapel was added to the existing facility in 1948 and in 1971 the home of Dr. M.L. Lanford was purchased and connected to the chapel.
Upon graduating from Presbyterian College and serving a two year stint in the U.S. Army, Richard H. Wood, Jr. joined the firm in 1963 on a full time basis and was elected secretary-treasurer, becoming the third generation of the Wood family in funeral service. He took over operation of the company in 1980, when his father passed away.
With well over a century of service to Greer and surrounding communities, Richard H. Wood, Jr., still serving as president of the firm, states: "We feel very fortunate that the community has put the confidence in us to carry out their wishes after death." Wood believes that longevity and a personal touch are the reasons that people put their trust in the business his family built.

Richard H. Wood, Jr. has been a Licensed Funeral Director for over 40 years. Richard is the third generation of The Wood family in funeral service. Graduating from Presbyterian College, Richard served 2 years of active duty in the U.S. Army. After marrying Sharone Bishop Wood, they became parents of two daughters and have one grandson.

Married to Stephanie Bull Jones, Greg and Stephanie have two sons and four grandsons. Greg has been employed with The Wood Mortuary, Inc. since 1976, and is a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer. Graduating from Spartanburg Methodist College and Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in 1982, Greg also served on the South Carolina State Board of Funeral Service from 2002 to 2005.

Myron has been employed with The Wood Mortuary, Inc. since May 1981, and is a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer. He is a 1984 graduate of Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science. Myron is married to Terri Henry Paris, and they have a son, two daughters, and five grandchildren. Myron and his wife are members of Greer First Baptist Church.

Bob is a 1986 graduate of Appalachian State University and a 2016 graduate of Piedmont Technical College. He is retired from the U.S. Army, married to Bonnie, and has three children. Bob has been employed with The Wood Mortuary, Inc. since August 2014, and serves as one of the firm’s Licensed Pre-Need Insurance agents.
