Myra Sloan Weatherly

Myra Sloan Weatherly, 98, wife of the late Dr. Owen Milton Weatherly, passed away September 22, 2024. A native of Spartanburg County, South Carolina, daughter of the late Otis Odell and Minnie Atkins Sloan, Mrs. Weatherly was a Furman University graduate and received her Master’s in Gifted Education from Converse College. During her long career, she taught high school English, elementary school (general education), and elementary and middle school (gifted education). She was the author of many articles in her field and published over 20 nonfiction books for middle school students. Mrs. Weatherly led gifted education workshops and seminars and often spoke at local and national conferences. She was a member of First Baptist Greenville, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (Carolinas chapter), the National Education Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honorary organization for outstanding women educators. She loved international travel and was a lifelong learner. Surviving are three children, Pamela Weatherly Carter (Lee) of Hillsborough, North Carolina, Marcia Weatherly James (Jeff) of Jamestown, North Carolina, and Jan Weatherly Valle (Paul) of New York, New York; two sisters, Patsy Sloan Turner of Inman, South Carolina, and Cheryl “Peachie” Sloan Smith of Lyman, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Jonathan Sloan Carter, Christa Carter Abedi, Melody James Pewitt, and Justin Owen James; and five great-grandchildren, Charles Owen Abedi, Saman Cyrus Abedi, Leila Myra Abedi, Lydia Elise Pewitt, and Adalyn Brook Pewitt. Mrs. Weatherly was predeceased by three grandchildren, Jessica Allyn Valle, Zachary Booth Valle, and Franco Thomas Valle. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2024, at The Wood Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be held 9:45-10:45 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2024, at The Wood Mortuary. Pallbearers will be Jonathan Carter, Justin James, Scott Abedi, Ben Pewitt, Eric Henderson, Matth Wisterman, and Terry Wisterman. As the eldest of eight children, Mrs. Weatherly was the matriarch of the Sloan family following the death of her parents. Welcoming to everyone she met, highly intelligent, well-versed, and caring, she loved her extended family, immediate family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with her whole being.
