Velma C. Oliver

December 16, 1923 - June 12, 2022

Velma Irene Carpenter Oliver, 98, wife of the late Edgar Hindman, passed away June 12, 2022. A native of Greer, daughter of the late George William and Nellie Pruitte Carpenter, she was a retired employee of J.P. Stevens Victor Plant and a member of Zoar United Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Gail C. Hyatt of Lyman; one brother, Rev. Al Carpenter (Millie) of Gloucester, VA; four sisters, Marilyn Miller of Greer, Ada Harrison of Greer, Aileen Sykes of Hope Mills, NC, and Frances Southerland of Taylors; one granddaughter, Stacey Hyatt Wascom of Duncan; four great-grandchildren, Maxwell Wascom, Hayden Wascom, Hunter Wascom, and Laine Hyatt Caiaccio; one grandson-in-law, Kevin Caiaccio of Atlanta, GA; and one “special son,” Alton Free of Lyman. Mrs. Oliver was predeceased by her first husband, Jim Oliver, a son-in-law, Tyree Edward Hyatt, four brothers, Charles Carpenter, Lewis A. Carpenter, James W. Carpenter, and Richard G. Carpenter, three sisters, Kathryn Carpenter, Elizabeth Jackson, and Margaret Hammett, and one granddaughter, Susan Allyce Hyatt Caiaccio. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at The Wood Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Michael Cheatham. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Mark Southerland, Richard Carpenter, Eugene Nichols, Max Wascom and Hunter Wascom. Visitation will be held after the committal service at the cemetery. The family is at their respective homes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zoar United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 333, Greer, SC 29652 or Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 686 Jeff Davis Dr., Spartanburg, SC 29303. Online condolences may be made at www.thewoodmortuary.com.
