James R. Castle

April 5, 1945 - January 7, 2022

James R. Castle, 76, passed away January 7, 2022. He was a native of Scottville, MI; son of the late Martin B. Castle and Maxine L. Veselits. Surviving are his wife, Cathy Amato Castle; daughters Amy Brummel (Rob) of Atlanta, GA and Sarah Beth Murphy (Brad) of Seattle, WA; stepfather, Eugene Veselits of Muskegon, MI; sisters Marsha Castle of Owensville, MO and Nancy Castle of Cape Elizabeth, ME; and grandchildren Julia and Quinn Jarratt and Brendan, Meghann, and Ryann Murphy. Jim was predeceased by one brother, Charles Castle. Jim loved life, beginning with family. He had a special passion for hunting and flyfishing, was an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling. Jim earned his Bachelors degree from the University of Michigan and his Masters degree from Michigan State University. After leading various state hospital associations for 44 years, Jim retired from the Ohio Hospital Association as President/CEO. In his honor, OHA created the James R. Castle Distinguished Service Award, presented annually. Jim served on many boards over the years, including the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. He is a past recipient of the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees award in recognition of his many contributions to healthcare. Jim was a faithful believer and active member of First Presbyterian Church Greenville. He was a committed and strong force in the recovering community. Visitation will be held at First Presbyterian Church Greenville on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 1:00pm, followed by a memorial service at 2:00pm. The family respectfully requests memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church Greenville, 200 W. Washington Street, Greenville, SC 29601. Online condolences may be made at www.thewoodmortuary.com.
