Ira R. Thackston Sr.

March 29, 1932 - March 11, 2022

Ira Richard Thackston, Sr., 89, husband of the late Betty Elizabeth Bradshaw Thackston, passed away March 11, 2022. A native of Spartanburg County, son of the late Henry Grady Thackston, Sr. and Mary Eula Davis Thackston. He was a retired employee of Lyman Printing and Finishing and Spartanburg County Schools. He was an active member of Liberty Hill United Methodist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Deborah T. Waddell (Gerald) of Lyman; one son, Ira Richard Thackston, II (Jodi) of Laurens; four grandchildren, Max Gresham (Jessica), Jessica Walker (Doug), Kesha Garner and Logan Thackston; nine great-grandchildren, Haleigh (Brooke), Katy, Chantz, Kinley, McKenna, Peyton, Hudson, Joshua, and Aubrey; one much loved daughter-in-love, Terri Baier of Astoria, Oregon; and many other extended family members and friends. He was also predeceased by two daughters, Linda Burrell and Tammy Thackston; three brothers, Garvin Thackston, Oneal Thackston, and Grady Thackston, Jr.; and one grandchild, Heidi Burrell. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2022, at Liberty Hill United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Nelson Stokes. Burial will follow in Abner Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gerald Waddell, Max Gresham, Doug Walker, and Ryan McGaha. Honorary escort will be the Men’s Sunday School Class of Liberty Hill United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Sunday after the committal service at Abner Creek Baptist Church. The family is at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to Liberty Hill United Methodist Church, 301 Liberty Hill Road, Greer, SC 29651. Online condolences may be made at www.thewoodmortuary.com
