February 26, 1929 - December 10, 2021
Dr. Arnold E. Emery, 92, passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021. He was born, as well as lived his whole life in the “Golden (Dark) Corner” of Northern Greenville County on Highway 11. He enjoyed his service for Jesus Christ as a member and past Chairman of the Deacons at Scenic Hills Baptist Church. He owned Arnold Emery Lumber Company from 1962 until his retirement. Arnold loved his involvement with helping the children at the Greenville Shriner’s Hospital as a member of the Flying Nobles, who flew the children to different hospitals around the United States. He became Chairman Emeritus of the Shriner’s Hospital Board in Greenville, SC. Also, he was a member of the Woodman of the World, and the Tyger Masonic Lodge #190 AFM in Tigerville, SC. He graduated from North Greenville University where he served as Chairman of the Board numerous times over many years. He received the Honorary Doctorate of Humanities Degree from the University in 1996. He wanted his community to have a fire department, so he made a tremendous difference by being one of the founding members of the Glassy Mountain Fire Department. The Governor of South Carolina honored Arnold in 2021 by giving him the highest honor in South Carolina – The Order of the Palmetto. Most important of all he served our great country in the US Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. Arnold had a genuine love for Jesus Christ, his wife, family, and others. He was a giver and not a taker. He believed the measure of his life was not its duration, but its donation. He was a servant leader and allowed Jesus Christ to make a tremendous difference through everything he said and did. For 71 years of marriage the love of his life, partner, and best friend, Pauline Hughes Emery, was always at his side and over the past several years took special care of him. They loved Jesus Christ and each other with all their hearts. Also, Jimmy and Jagina King (his niece), were diligent in their efforts to give him care and love over the years, as well as Jimmy and Gretchen Epting. In addition, Betty, Barbara, Dee Dee, Kim, Mary, and Sonya were the best caregivers one could ever want. Arnold’s memory will be forever cherished in the hearts of all who knew him; including his many nephews and nieces who were very special to him. A private cryptside service, which celebrated Arnold’s life, was held on Monday, December 13, 2021, at Hillcrest Memory Gardens Mausoleum, conducted by Dr. Jimmy Epting and Rev. Tommy Brashier. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Scenic Hills Baptist Church, 10 Old US Highway 25, Travelers Rest, SC 29690 or Wren Hospice, 955 Wade Hampton Blvd., Unit 3A, Greer, SC 29650.
