Warren G. Burgess

October 1, 1930 – March 11, 2017 Warren Gilbert Burgess was born October 1, 1930 to William Raymond Burgess and Annie Josephine (Lynch) Burgess. He was the only boy in a family of five (Jacqueline, Shirley, Amber, Warren, and Judith) and was raised in the family home in Sanford, Maine where he also graduated from high school. Warren’s father William was a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant who served on active duty in three wars (WW I, WW II, and Korea) and who also coached the U.S. Army baseball team. After high school, Warren went to college in Boston, MA earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration before enlisting in the U.S. Navy as a Navigator. Warren served in the Navy during the Korean War before moving to a life-long career in medical finances. In this career he worked as an accountant for Blue Cross, started his own consulting practice, and then was employed as a comptroller, accountant, and eventually CEO for several hospitals across New England, New York state, and the South. Warren married the love of his life, Judith Louisa (Wibel) Burgess on July 12, 1974. Judith and her five children (René, Velma, Larry, Russell, and Matthew) joined Warren and his five children (Paula, Dawne, Bill, Amanda, and Nathan) in Warner, NH, and in 1976 they had another son together (Daniel Warren). Together this family moved from New Hampshire to Maine to New York to North Carolina, Alabama, and South Carolina before growing roots in Traveler’s Rest, South Carolina where Warren and Judith spent their last 22 years together in Travelers Rest. Warren loved reading, studying the Bible, old movies, woodworking, and gardening. He also loved people, and his “bear hugs” were a staple of his greetings until only weeks before he passed. Warren and Judith built their social life around their church, most recently at the Greenville Christian Fellowship on State Park Road, in reenville, SC. Warren attended this loving church for the final ten years of his life, and he built eternal friendships there with Pastor Randy Cook and many others that will soon be restored in Heaven. Warren’s life verse (Ps. 115:1) and his final days were a consistent testimony to his love of Jesus and desire to glorify God. He went to meet the Lord Jesus Christ in his sleep on March 11, 2017. Warren is survived by his wife Judith, his eleven combined children and step-children, twenty grandchildren (Thomas, Diana, and Judy Genovese; Alex and Rachel Mold; Chelsea, Grayson, McKenzie, and Clark Burgess; Jack and Thomas O’Leary; Ashley Burgess; Jonathon, Robert, and Andrew Burgess; Lydia, Jared, and Sarah Cempa; and Joshua and Lily Burgess), eight great-grandchildren, and one sister (Amber Durham). He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Jacqueline Spicer, Shirley Hutter, and Judy Burgess, his first wife, Dorothy Terrell, and one infant son, Christian Burgess. The family wishes to acknowledge the loving care shown by the dedicated staff at Greer Memorial Hospital and especially Warren’s attending physician, Dr. James Biddle, who helped care for Warren through two decades of diabetes and one decade after open heart surgery. We appreciate the many kindnesses shown to Warren and Judith and to the family. The family also wishes to. thank the Interim Hospice staff for their care and guidance. There will be a visitation and memorial Monday, March 13, 2017 from 6-8 PM at the Greenville Christian Fellowship on State Park Road, Greenville.
