Martha S. Hayes

Martha S. Hayes, 98, wife and high school sweetheart of the late Wilton L. Hayes, passed away October 10, 2022. A native of Duncan, SC, born February 9, 1924, in The Woods Chapel Community of Spartanburg County, to the late Thomas Dewitt and Amanda Ione Smith, she was a graduate of Duncan High School and then attended Spartanburg Business School. Martha was an employee for many years in Human Resources at Lyman Printing and Finishing, Harley Bag Corporation, and Union Camp. Mrs. Hayes was active in numerous community organizations. She was an active faithful member of Duncan United Methodist Church until moving to Charleston where she worshiped at Holy Cross Episcopal Church on Daniel Island. Her friends and family remember Martha, affectionately known to many as “Mot”, as a kind and gracious lady; a loving mother, grandmother, aunt; the “go to” person for any need; and a baker of fabulous pound cakes. Surviving are two daughters, Martha Hayes Brown (Rex), and Jane Hayes Welch, both of Daniel Island, SC; two grandchildren, Stephen Hayes Wiser (Monica) of Beaufort, SC, and Charles H. Welch, Jr. (Mandy) of Nashville, TN; four great-grandchildren, Alan Hayes Wiser of Beaufort, SC, Luke Foxwell Wiser of Beaufort, SC, Catherine Barbara Welch of Nashville, TN, and Charles Herbert Welch III of Nashville, TN; five nephews, Roy Jackson, Eric Mullinax, Morris Mullinax, Terry Batchler-Smith, and Jim Batchler-Smith; and one niece, Kathy Rogers. Mrs. Hayes was predeceased by her siblings: Hazel Jackson, Helen Bruce, Gentry Smith, Doris Stephens, Virginia Mullinax, and Morris Smith; grandchild, Martha Elizabeth Welch; and son-in-law, Charles H. Welch. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Friday, October 14, 2022, at The Wood Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Eric Mullinax. Burial will follow in Wood Memorial Park. A reception will be held after the committal at Duncan United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held 12:30-1:45PM, Friday, October 14, 2022, at The Wood Mortuary.
