Mabel C Barton

Heading: Mabel C. Barton Dateline: Greer Mabel Copeland Barton, widow of J.T. Barton, Jr. of Greer, died August 22, 2013 at Greer Memorial Hospital. Born on December 9, 1928 in Marion, NC, she was the daughter of the late Conrad Cutlass and Fannie Lamb Copeland. She was a graduate of Marion High school at the age of 16, and graduated from Furman University at the age of 19. She played the clarinet in the Marion High School and Furman University bands. She began teaching at Old Fort High School in NC where she taught returning veterans from WWII who were older than she was. Mrs. Barton was a retired employee of the School District of Greenville County after more than 20 years of service. She was baptized at Clinchfield Baptist Church in Marion, NC, and after marriage she joined First Baptist Church of Greer where she was a member for 63 years. She loved her family with all of her heart; she was affectionately known as “Mamay” by her grandchildren and many others. She enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play sports, and she attended most all of their games as their strongest fan. She also loved spending time with family and friends at Lake Summit from the time she dated her husband there as a teenager. She loved listening to Billy Graham. She followed his crusades for decades and contributed to his ministry for over 30 years. She had a close relationship with her beloved sisters and enjoyed spending time with their families, and she adored her special dog, Jitterbug. She touched the lives of all who knew her, and she inspired her family, friends, and former students with the manner in which she conducted her life. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Mary Barton, her daughter Anne Dewley, and her daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Tony McCullough; her grandchildren, Laura (George) Ward, Glenn (Lauren) Gibson, Erin (Marc) Melton, David Galloway, Thomas Barton, Jonathan McCullough, and Matthew McCullough; great grandchildren, Owen Gibson and Briana Melton; sisters and brother-in-law Jo Ann Willis and Connie( Jerry) Smith. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband after 54 years of marriage, her sister Janice Lang, her son-in-law Ralph Dewley, and grandson Shane Galloway. The family would like to especially thank her wonderful Home Helpers, Cindy Anthony and Elvene Dowless, who cared for her with love. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 Monday afternoon at the Wood Mortuary conducted by Dr. Wilson Nelson and Dr. Rick Ezell. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 Sunday evening at the Wood Mortuary. The family will be at the home. Pallbearers will be Jerry Smith, Terry Willis, Glenn Gibson, David Galloway, Thomas Barton, Jonathan McCullough, and Matthew McCullough.
