J. Wesley Drawdy, Sr.

J. Wesley Drawdy, Sr. Cherryville, NC J. Wesley Drawdy, Sr., 83, a resident of Cherryville, N.C. died July 5th 2009. Born in Jamison, S.C., he was the last surviving son of Lawrence Wesley [Lonnie] Drawdy and Agnes Jane Wilson Drawdy. Immediately upon his HS graduation in 1944 from Porter Military Academy in Charleston, S.C., he entered active duty as an enlisted man in the Merchant Marines. He was selected for Officer Candidate School and served as a Ship’s Second Officer. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Furman University in 1952, he attended the Washington University School of Law on a scholarship, graduating and obtaining his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1955. He practiced law in Columbia, S.C. for several decades. Mr. Drawdy was active in the Sons of Confederate Veterans, as well as the Military Order of Stars and Bars for many years, serving as Past Judge Advocate of the latter. In addition to being a member of numerous other social, literary, benevolent and scientific organizations and a Past Exalted Ruler in the B.P.O.E., he was an ardent and persistent American and Southern Patriot who devoted much of his life to restoring the freedoms Mankind had won in 1783 and lost in 1865. Mr. Drawdy remained a hale and robust man, enjoying a dance with his favorite companion & dance partner as recently as June 27, 2009. He was a Jeffersonian Christian. Surviving are a son Wes Jr. and daughter-in-law Sara Lee Drawdy of Greenville, S.C.; son Pete Drawdy of Greenville, S.C.; two daughters, Doireann O’Draeda of Greenville, S.C. and Aleta Drawdy of Kansas City, Mo.; and five grandchildren: Trevor, Sally, Ellen, Aisling & Honore. Also surviving is his long-time friend, Karleen Price of Cherryville, N.C. Memorials may be made to the Vance B. Drawdy Library at the Museum of Confederate History, 15 Boyce Ave., Greenville, S.C. 29601. Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 14th at the Wood Mortuary, 300 West Poinsett St., Greer, S.C. Visitation: 10:00 a.m. at the Mortuary. Graveside Service and Burial will be at a future date at the National Cemetery in Columbia, S.C.
