Jacqueline Mary Mason Smith

It is with heavy hearts and the deepest sadness that we tell you of the passing of our beloved Mother, Jacqueline Mason Smith, 89 years fabulous, on Thursday evening March 14, 2024. Jackie was the wife of the late James Henry Smith. Please help us honor her and celebrate her journey to Heaven on Thursday, March 21, 2024, 11:00 a.m. at Graceland East Memorial Park, 2206 Woodruff Road, Simpsonville, South Carolina. Jackie was born December 29, 1934, in Woodruff, South Carolina, to Nelson E. and Mary C. Mason. She was the eldest of seven siblings growing up together in the Mills Mill area. Jackie and Henry moved to Greer, SC in the early 1960’s to raise their then young family. If you knew Jackie, you knew a lady deeply committed to her faith and her family. She never ceased praying for all of us and we knew her prayers for us were constant. She was an active, long-time member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Greer where she loved her church family, her Sunday School class and singing in the church choir. Jackie, Nanny to her grands and great-grands, raised her girls and then helped them raise their own children. With the grands and great-grands it was purely a selfless mission of joy without the constraints of parenthood. It was all done with endless fun and laughter. Jackie and Henry enjoyed their adventures together as they traveled around the country. She missed those adventures when Daddy passed away. Even traveling to Hawaii after he was gone and deciding it was just not the same. Jackie had been a nurse in her career and assisted both the doctors and the mothers as they delivered their babies. She also was a sought-after home health nurse. Jackie loved to read and to watch NASCAR. She always had a stack of books ready and her phone in hand to talk with her sister, Audrey, while they watched “the races” together. Mother loved the outdoors. When her grandchildren were growing up Mom and Dad had a pool. Summers were full of swimming and pool parties for them. She loved her flowers, especially her Irises and daffodils. She loved decorating her front porch with seasonal decor. You could always tell which holiday was approaching just by a walk onto her porch. Mostly she loved sitting and watching her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren play outside in her yard. She was not shy and had a quick wit that everyone loved. Her lovely laughter will never be forgotten. She always gave us a warm kiss and a firm “I love you!” when we had to depart. Her boundless energy, strong will, incredible work ethic, and fierce determination served her well over her entire lifetime. She perservered, carried on when many others would have given up. She was tough, independent, and spirited. She is so very missed beyond measure and always will be. We will cherish and never forget the wonderful memories that were made over her long lifetime. She reveled in us, her family. Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, James Henry Smith, son-in-love, Mark Robert Carlton, her parents, and several sisters and brothers. Left to love and remember her are her daughters, Teresa Smith (Donald Rhea) of Charleston, SC, Sandra Carlton of Greer, SC; grandchildren, Ashley Binette Kabel, Megan Carlton Lewis (Kyle), Tyler James Binette, and Mason Robert Carlton; great-grandchildren, Jaden Tanner Carlton, Harper Kayleigh Lewis, Wills Henry Kabel, Lincoln Mark Henry Lewis, Norah Mae Lewis; two sisters Audrey Belcher and Jan Green both of Woodruff, SC. Our family would like to thank Harmony at Five Forks Assisted Living for the care Mom received in the last few months. The staff there are patient, skilled, and compassionate. Our mother was safe and cared for. We also want to thank Ms. Bobbye Lewis, Mother’s suitemate. We called them Thelma and Louise. They did everything together from meals, to activities, and the Wednesday Happy Hour.
