Henry Marshall Cox

Henry Marshall Cox, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend went to be with his Creator on Tuesday, January 28. Henry was a simple man who enthusiastically loved his family, his country, and his God. He was born ninth of ten children in 1925 during the Great Depression to Bunnie and Bertha Cox in Long Creek, SC. He spent some of his early years in a Civilian Conservation Corps in Oconee County and worked on a number of community projects in that region. At the age of 16 he joined the US Navy and spent the rest of his teen years serving his country in World War II. At the age of 19, he married Ruby Phillips whom he loved faithfully for the next 69 years. He provided for his family as a general contractor and later worked at Cryovac for more than 25 years until his retirement in 1988. For as long as he was able, Henry was very active in his church, Loree United Methodist, where he served as both builder and board member. His last building project there was the fellowship hall that bears his name. In his free time, Henry enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and bowling with friends and his beloved son, Jerry. He was also a Mason and member of the Tucapau lodge. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Phillips Cox, daughters Sylvia Turner and Phyllis McBride, daughter-in-law, Bronwyn Cox, five grandchildren: Alice Cox, Kim Price, Phillip Turner, John McBride and Jerry McBride, and four great grandchildren Billie, Luke, and Zach Price, and Kaylee Turner. His son and best friend, Jerry Cox, died just four days earlier. His surviving sisters are Violet Chatos and Ann Barnes of Greenwood and Abbeville respectively. He was predeceased by his father, Bunnie Cox, mother, Bertha Matheson Cox, sisters Ina Sanders, Etta Culbreth, Grace Carver, Nora Mason, and brothers Judge, Frank, and George Cox. In the final days of his life, he was cared for by loving care givers AlMonya Franks, Francenia Sullivan, Kelsey Tredwell, and many other wonderful people. Pallbearers are Grandsons John and Jerry McBride, Phillip Turner, Grand-son-in-law Ben Price, and nephews Benny and Gary Phillips. Visitation will be held at 1:00 at Loree United Methodist Church in Wellford on Sunday, February 2nd. The celebration service of Henry's life will be held at 2:00 at Loree. Graveside will be at Wood Memorial Park in Duncan immediately following services at Loree.
