Elizabeth "Lib" Powell

Elizabeth R. “Lib” Powell, 92, wife of the late Billy H. Powell, Sr., lost her courageous battle with cancer on December 19, 2023. Born June 13, 1931, to the late Sam and Hortense Richey in Duncan, South Carolina at the Power Plant community on Gap Creek Road, and immediately brought joy and laughter into the world. A loving mother and a remarkable woman. She was one of the strongest, most courageous, kindest, and loving women to ever walk this earth and her family was blessed to have her as the matriarch of their family. She instilled in her children that all she ever wanted was for us to love one another. Lib was known for her warm and quick-witted personality. She loved her snake plants, and what we call “Beading”, she would sit at her kitchen table and string beads for necklaces for hours. Mrs. Powell also loved going to yard sales looking for treasures. She had a generous heart, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her kindness and compassion touched the lives of many, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will be forever cherished by her family and friends. Her legacy will endure, her spirit will continue to inspire us all. In our hearts, she lives on, and we will forever honor the remarkable woman who made a lasting impact ON OUR world. Surviving are her three children, Connie McKinney (Robert), Donna Powell, and Camala Messer (Tim); nine grandchildren, Patrick, Marshall, Allison, Stephanie, Jennifer, Brandon, Lauren, Michael, and Sam; ten great grandchildren, Ian, IIana, Dawson, Evan, Hannah, Nick, Aubree, Bella, Hailee, and Sydney; and one great-great grandchild, Millie. Mrs. Powell was predeceased by one son, Billy H. “Hugh” Powell, Jr.; and three siblings, Stewart Richey, Bill Richey, and Martha (Lucille) Fowler. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Duncan United Methodist Church conducted by Pastor Susie Sullivan and Pastor Bernard Miles.
