Douglas Richard Lewis March 30, 1951—August 22, 2018 On Wednesday, August 22, Douglas R. Lewis, dear husband of Linda Lancaster, passed away at his home in Landrum, SC. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, August 27, at First Baptist Church Gowensville, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Schmidt. Visitation will follow the service in the Family Life Center. Douglas was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, to missionary parents, the late Rev. Kenneth Paul and Eunice Douglas Lewis. He attended the Alliance Academy in Quito, Ecuador, where he was an active soccer player. Douglas received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geography from Bowling Green State University (OH) and was a Fulbright Hays Scholar in Ecuador. He also attended the Na-tional Intelligence and Policy Program at Harvard University’s JFK School of Government. During more than 27 years of service as an Army Intelligence Officer (Foreign Area Officer - Latin America), Douglas had duty tours in Korea, Germany, and served as a combat intelligence ad-visor for two years in El Salvador. He also served on the Army Staff and the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon where he was known for his in-depth knowledge of global affairs and quick sense of humor. He provided daily briefings to the Chief of Staff of the Army and to the Chiefs of Operations and Intelligence of the Joint Chiefs, among others. For his service, Douglas was awarded numerous personal and unit decorations, including the Defense Superior Service Medal and the Legion of Mer-it. He was at work in The Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Upon his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel, Douglas and Linda moved to the Landrum area where they enjoyed their many pets, a wonderful view, and the great food in local restaurants. He continued to stay abreast of world affairs and taught geography as an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina Upstate, Spartanburg, where he enjoyed mentoring his students, and they, in turn, recognized him as one of their favorite professors. His real passion, however, was sports, and he had an encyclopedic knowledge of world soccer teams, players, and standings. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Linda Day Lancaster, his older brother Kenneth (Sue) of Lansdale, PA, and their children and grandchildren.
