Dick Baldwin

Colonel Harold R. “Dick” Baldwin, 89, passed away November 18, 2023. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, son of the late Harold L. and Burgess T. Baldwin, he attended the University of South Carolina where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degree, was a United States Air Force Veteran, where he was a fighter pilot, then became a fighter pilot instructor and eventually retired from the Air Force Reserves as a Colonel. Dick joined Spartan Mills in 1964 where he served as Vice President of information services. Mr. Baldwin was a member of First Presbyterian Church from the time his family moved to Greer in 1964. He served as Deacon, Elder, and taught Sunday school for many years. He also started the Greer chapter of the Christian Businessmen’s Association. Dick was a selfless, dedicated, loyal, and benevolent man who put the needs and wants of others above himself, the man who gave the best advice, back scratches, told the best stories (especially Twas the Night Before Christmas), but above all loved the best. Always greeted you with a contagious smile and a cold toddy in hand. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Jean “BJ” Eskew Baldwin of the home; two sons, Stephen M. Baldwin of Greer, South Carolina and Bradley R. Baldwin (Cathy) of Atlanta, Georgia; two daughters, Elaine B. Hunt of Greer, South Carolina and Becky B. Johnson of Greer, South Carolina; seven grandchildren, Nickie Hart (Tim), Taylor Johnson (Cat), Julia Ross (Hunter), Haley Smith (Devin), Casey Koon (Ramsey), Whitney Hunt, and Melissa Malo (Russ); and eight great-grandchildren, Liam Hart, Ansley Koon, Benton Koon, Levi Hart, Marley Craig Smith, Jennings “Jett” Johnson, Miller Kate Smith, and Della Jean Ross. Mr. Baldwin was predeceased by one brother, James L. Baldwin; and one son-in-law, F. Craig Johnson. Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at The Wood Mortuary Chapel conducted by Pastor Tommy Harvey. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Tommy Williams, Keith Hunt, Pierce Williams, Mike Howell, Tony King, and Pete Smith. Visitation will be held 1:30-2:45 p.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at The Wood Mortuary.
