Cora Alexander Haynes

Born nearly eighty-six years ago on Crow Creek, near the Keowee River, Cora Alexander Haynes was one of eleven children of a farming father and a schoolteacher mother lost too young, and granted a stepmother she called an “angel on this Earth,” who raised all eleven as her own. Cora worked at Southern Bell in Greenville for thirty-five years, eight of them before she married James Hunter Haynes, Sr., who then joined her in helping care and provide extras for the children still at home on the farm. She had learned to value hard work and no one ever worked harder to make an old house beautiful and create an abundance she could share with others. She had high standards and would likely let you know when you failed to meet them – and love you anyway if you made amends (or made her laugh hard enough, as the case may be – and, oh, how she could laugh when she was tickled). She will be remembered with gratitude, fondness, respect, and a great deal of love and admiration for her generosity and forbearance. She is survived by her children, James Hunter Haynes, Jr. (Jim) and Rebecca Hunter Koch (with husband David), her grandchildren, Sarah Catherine Burns (with husband Derrick) and imminent great-grandson David Hollis Burns; James Hunter Haynes III and Audrey Elizabeth Haynes; her remaining brothers and sisters Lila A. Steen, Ruth A. Greer, Caroline A. Morgan, William T. Alexander, Jr., H. Carli Alexander (with wife Lavonne), Daniel “Boone” Alexander (with wife Sharon), Brenice A. Murphree, and R. Dwight Alexander (with wife Miriam), brother-in-law Furman Whitmire; and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death and, because the circle will be unbroken, was welcomed to a better home awaiting by Hunter, her husband of forty-seven years, her father William Talton Alexander, Sr., her mothers Elizabeth Barker Alexander and Mittie Crenshaw Alexander, and sisters Gladys A. Watson, and Helen A. Whitmire. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Visitation with the family will begin on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 10:30AM in the Fellowship Hall of Earle Street Baptist Church, followed by a memorial service at 12:00 noon. Because she was a member and faithful servant to Earle Street Baptist Church for decades and, in her later years, attended Keowee Baptist Church in Six Mile, donations may be sent to the one of your choice in lieu of flowers.
