Charles Harrill

Charles Gaston Harrill, 78 of 105 Oak Forest Drive, died August 15, 2009 at his residence. He was born April 9, 1931 son of the late Earl and Leora Hill Harrill in Wadesboro, NC; he was a retired Air Traffic Controller, a U.S. Navy Veteran and a member of Riverside Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Nelma Watson Harrill of the home; two sons, Charles David Harrill and wife Vanda of Senoia, GA and Joseph Mark Harrill and wife Tammy of Greer; a daughter, Cathy Stewart of Greer; two sisters, Juanita Carver of Rutherfordton, N.C. and Better McCuster of Tennessee; ten grandchildren, Charles Caleb Harrill, Ashlee Diane Harrill, David Andrew Harrill, Christian Stewart, Christa Stewart, Kamren Harrill, Karsen Harrill, Mandy Reames, Josh Merck and Cody Merck. Mr. Harrill was predeceased by three brothers, Wilburn Harrill, John B. Harrill and Yates Harrill, one sister Virginia Hill. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Riverside Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Drew Hines and Rev. Marcus Buckley. Burial will be in Smokey Mountain Memory Gardens in Sevierville, Tennessee. Charles (Charlie) grew up in Forest City, NC and went to Cool Springs High School. He was addicted to golf and started out as a caddie but quickly began playing well. After High School Charlie joined the navy and was stationed in Adak, Monterrey, Oklahoma City, and Pensacola. But he never stopped playing golf. He played a tournament at Castle Air Force Base with Gene Littler and Billy Casper in October of 1951. He continued to play golf at Ashville Biltmore Jr. College while getting his associates. After graduation he transferred to the University of Tennessee where he fell in love with his wife, Nelma Watson. They were married on December 1956 and were married over 52 years. God blessed them with three children. Charlie loved golf but his greatest love was his wife and three children and grandchildren. He became an Air Traffic Controller for twenty three years while still a scratch golfer and even running a golf course. Even with pulmonary problems at 68, he was a seven handicap, “if he could ride to the ball.” Charlie loved his Lord and was committed to his church, Riverside Baptist Church, Greer, SC-.
