John Mayer

John Alan Mayer M.D., passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on November 2, 2024. John was born in Dayton, OH on July 24,1940, the son of the late Albert Guy Mayer and Sara Martha Abel Mayer. He attended high school at Ironton High School in Ironton, OH graduating in 1958. He enjoyed playing basketball there and was proud to be named part of the Fabulous Six during the 1957-58 basketball season. He continued his education at Kenyon College in Gambier, OH where he also played basketball as a Kenyon Owl for two years before transferring to the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH graduating with a B.S. in Psychology in 1962. For his post graduate education, he attended the University of Louisville Medical School, receiving his medical degree in 1966. After attending a short medical internship in general medicine, he was drafted into the US army and promoted from lieutenant to captain in the Army Medical Corps and deployed to serve in Vietnam from 1967-1968 where he received a Bronze Star. After returning from active duty, he began his medical residencies which included Duke University and the University of Louisville, training in both Diagnostic Radiology as well as Nuclear Medicine and Angiography. He spent the majority of his working medical career as the Chief Radiologist at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland, Kentucky from 1978-1998. He also served as the hospital’s Chief of Staff from 1993-1994. Upon retirement he moved to Kiawah Island, SC to enjoy golfing, boating and the ocean and spent time in the mountains at his home in Seven Devils, NC. In the last ten years he decided to move to Greer, SC to be closer to his family. John never knew a stranger and had a deep love for his family. He enjoyed helping anyone in need and was always called upon for his medical knowledge and advice. He was always generous with his time and abilities and upon moving to his neighborhood selflessly took on the dreaded leadership roles of the HOA where he resided. John deeply loved the United States of America, and you would seldom see him without a patriotic shirt or hat. He always looked forward to Ohio State football and basketball season and with his quick wit and sense of humor always made sure to give his relatives that attended the University of Kentucky a hard time. John is survived by his wife of 63 years Blanche “Bea” Payne Mayer and his three daughters Katherine “Katie” Puckett (Whitney) of Charlotte, NC, Carolyn Berg (Matt) of Greenville, SC and Sarah Jordan (Michael) of Simpsonville, SC. He is also survived by his sisters Susan Falter and Margaret “Peggy” Hill and a brother Jim Mayer as well as his five grandchildren Riley Puckett, Aaron Puckett, Ava Jordan, Colin Jordan and Grey Jordan.
