Betty G. Kay

Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and sister, Betty Gastley Kay, joined her husband John in Heaven on October 30, 2014. She had been a resident of the Cottages of Brushy Creek for the past year. A native of Habersham County Georgia, Betty was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Zora Lee King Gastley. She was a loyal member of Memorial United Methodist Church for many years and had missed participating in church activities the past few years due to health issues. A retired library assistant at Riverside High School, she enjoyed needlework, baking, trips to the beach where she collected seashells and riding through the local country areas and mountains. Betty loved all holidays and making them special for her children and later her grandchildren. She will be remembered as a loving and dedicated wife and mother. Surviving are two daughters Janet Kay Watt (George) of Chapin, Julia Kay Welch (Jack) of Greenville, son John William Kay Jr. (Laurie) of Taylors, brother, Richard D. Gastley of Cummings, Georgia – six grandchildren, Shelley McWhorter, John William Kay, III, Jennifer Kay, Andrew Sutton, Richard Welch and Rebecca Welch, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, John William Kay, three brothers, Roy, Curtis and Ray Gastley. A Memorial service will be observed Saturday, November 8, at 2:00 PM, at Memorial United Methodist Church in Greer. Reverends Joseph Curtis, John Rush, and George Strait will lead the service. Honorary escorts will be the Seekers Sunday School Class and the Afternoon Circle. Visitation will be held after the service in the church social hall. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Betty’s memory to Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 N. Main Street, Greer, SC 29650. The family wishes to express thanks and gratitude to the dedicated and loving staff at The Cottages of Brushy Creek, especially to the staff of the Tea Olive Cottage for their genuine loving care they gave our Mother.
