Henry Jiles Runion, 92, of Hammett Crossing, Greer went to be with the Lord, Monday, February 1, 2010, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Evangeline Finley Runion.
A native of Greenville County, he was the son of the late Ben and Mentie Turner Runion. He attended Greer High School. Having been in the Merchant Marines during WWII, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and worked in local textile mills.
He and his first wife, Velma, were the owners and operators of Tiny Tot Nursery on Brushy Creek Road, Taylors. He was known to the children at the nursery as “Papa Runion.” His hobbies were traveling and gardening.
He was a devoted Christian and served in a number of churches in this area. He was a charter member and co-founder of Lee Road Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon and was President of the Joy Club.
Surviving also are two daughters, Sandra Lasseter of Lawrenceville, GA and Janet Spearman (Gene) of Greenville; four sisters, Beatrice Charping and Betty Owens of Taylors, Margaret Treadway of Greenville, and Gennell Masters of Greer; four grandchildren, Sherry Gerringer of Greensboro, NC, Keith Lasseter of Atlanta, GA, Gena Craig of Greer, and Derrick Spearman of Greenville and 12 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was pre-deceased in death by his first wife, Velma Cox Runion, a infant daughter, Cheryl, a grandson, Eddie Lasseter, a son in law, Pete Lasseter, two brothers, James Runion and Carroll Runion and sister, Kate Runion Patterson.
Funeral Services will be 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Lee Road Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Todd Stewart and Dr. Drew Hines. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be 1:00 – 2:45 p.m. Wednesday at Lee Road Baptist Church.
Families are at their respective homes.
